Guardians of The Galaxy Volume Three and Bittersweet Goodbyes.
Guardians 3 thoughts, a design spotlight on the rad CMB Graphic Design, Pokerface, and just a touch of SUPERMAN.
Guardians of The Galaxy Volume: 3 and Bittersweet Goodbyes.
After a crazy successful run at the box office, Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume Three has finally dropped on digital, so I gave it a rewatch. Just as fantastic as the first viewing.
Like many young people, I’ve very much grown up with these movies, and these characters, they’ve been incredibly formative to me as a person. I’d awfully sketch drawings of Starlord in my notebook after watching the first one, and I’m not ashamed to say that James Gunn provided the building blocks to a music taste for me beyond EDM music and Imagine Dragons. Needless to say, I’ve never been more attached to a group of characters quite like the Guardians.
I’m going to get into a few spoilers now, so if you’re yet to see the film. What are you doing? Get out of here or skip ahead to the next segment of the newsletter.
In 2014, The first time we met James Gunn’s take on the Guardians, they found each other insufferable, nobody in the audience knew them like they knew The Avengers, nobody really cared. It’s safe to say now in 2023 the opposite is true for all of the aforementioned. We care a lot. We didn’t want to say goodbye, but we had to.
I’m sure many of you can also relate to that feeling. I’ve experienced it many times now and I’m only twenty. I emigrated away from all of my best friends in South Africa who I'd seen these films with to the UK in order to be with family and get a chance at a better education, and ultimately to end up on this path as a graphic designer at university. Peter, Mantis, Gamora. They all need to go off and do very much the same in order to beat the growing pains. So when Rocket reacts so viscerally, it really, really got me. And by the time he and the others are screaming and dancing to The Dog Days are Over I am bawling my eyes out.
It’s raw, it’s beautiful, and it’s the most authentic I’ve ever seen the MCU be. Sometimes the biggest gift you can give the people you love the most is a little space to go their own way. It’s bittersweet, but that’s life, and it’s a feeling that James Gunn captures so viscerally here. I truly believe he’s going to do even greater things with his tenure leading the DC films in a brighter, more hopeful direction!
Designer of the Week: CMB Graphic Design (@cmbgraphicdesign)
This is the first spotlight on someone who’s shown immediate great support and advice to me prior to a feature, I’ve not told him I’m doing this. But here it is…
Callum is constantly designing alternative movie posters with a very timeless and elegant feel to them. The texturing in his work is delicate, and almost invisible in a way that it’s felt but never overwhelming to the given composition. Another thing that might go over looked is his fantastic typographic lockups for his titles and copy text, everything just flows together perfectly. It’s almost shocking how this guy manages to redefine films with such iconic pre-existing poster identities like The Green Knight and The Batman yet still successfully make them his own. Dont just take my word for it, go check out Callum’s print store and portfolio! Keep it up man.
What I’ve been working on:
Notice here how the post doesnt say grungiestbunny at the top, but rather Natasha Lyonne… Because she reposted my work on her page! What the hell man. No words. Thank you.
What I saw this week:
My Adventures with Superman (Ep 1) - Coming from Adult Swim, an animated Superman series set in its own continuity. The first episode is free to stream on Youtube, so I gave it a watch out of curiosity. I’m pleased to say that it's incredibly charming with a really endearing re-imagination of Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, etc. It's safe to say I'm a little bit out of the target age demographic for this one. But that's alright. I hope kids can find in this what I found in Batman/ Superman the Animated series from Bruce Timm and company. Between this and Harley Quinn, DC are really hitting with some of their recent stuff on the animation side of things. Go check it out!
The cool stuff corner:
Super Eyepatch Wolf pro wrestling video series - The host of this series speaks with such passion about pro-wrestling, and the WWE, that it took me from zero interest to some genuine investment in it. Definitely recommend disassociating to this one.
Neat motion poster by @madebyboog - Go give him some love.
Ron Perlman is not f*cking around with the studio execs during the writers and actors strikes, and we love that.
Find me out in the wild (@grungiestbunny everywhere):
Ko-Fi (I got my first donation just yesterday, which is unbelievable to me! <3)
