When Not Feeling Fly like a G6.
Grunge-Mail [Issue 02] - Chatting about the work of Rafa Orrico Díez, Spotify's weird A.I. DJ,and a few cool recommendations.
We’re coming to you live from the back waters, the back rooms, the backstreet with some hip-hop classics. This is G.R.U.N.G.E. FM 92.5, colloquially known as G-Mail, with me your host the Grungiest Bunny. In this second issue of the newsletter… Happy Pride Month to those who celebrate, and an unhappy one to those who don't, by the way!
When not feeling ‘Fly like a G6?’
I can't speak for other people, but a harmful mentality that weeds itself into me personally is the way that I compartmentalise my ‘success’ in relation to my ‘failure’. Insofar as my university degree feedback returned to me, okay great, two of the best grades I’ve gotten so far, oh, and one dud. Naturally my inner monologue immediately tried to pile-drive how I’m never going to make it in life as a result, because shrugging it off was never an option.
I don't have much deep wisdom in regards to this, so I’m sorry in that regard. But what I can say is eventually we just have to move on from the bad, learn from it where we can, and appreciate the wins we get with as much respect. I’m going into this third and final year of my degree, and personal design practice swinging. (Do not check back with me in five months.)
Designer Spotlight…
Rafa Orrico Díez (@DiezOrrico)
Rafa is one of my top graphic design inspirations lately. I can say with ease that he's in that rare club of designers whose work just scratches my heart and brain in the right way every time. His print posters pop with contrasting colour and life, topped off by a gritty sometimes painterly aesthetic that just draws me in. Beyond the creatively composed visuals, I love Diez’ typography and lettering. Virtually always composed in some intriguing and experimental way yet always feeling fitting thematically to any given piece. Messy design as orchestrated by a creative genius, in my opinion. I can't wait to see what else he puts out this year. Go give his work a long hard look, it's fantastic.
My recent work:
Currently I’m at work brainstorming ideas, and rough layout concepts for my next Poker Face poster design for the sixth episode, ‘Exit Stage Death’. Sometimes it can be frustrating getting a little thumbnail I sketch out into Photoshop in the way that I envision. But! I will keep chipping away at it. And when it’s ready, it’s ready.
What my eyes and ears have been taking in…
The Spotify A.I. DJ - Even weirder than it says on the tin, this feature has a little man in your ear called ‘X’ attempting to impress you with his talented DJing skills featuring stuff you kind of enjoy, then jumps into some paid product placement for Yungblud, followed by attempts to make you feel nostalgic but simply reminds you of how mediocre your music taste was five years ago. It is now playing ‘Komm, Susser Tod’ and I am depressed!
The Summer Games Fest - Little known fact, I do partake in a little bit of video gaming. Not as much as you might anticipate, but I am currently pretty invested in an Elden Ring playthrough and coping just fine-ish. Ergo, I like to try and humour the little bi-yearly gaming announcement shows. This year? I mean. Nick Cage showed up. Which is an unfair ploy to grab my emotion. A squirrel got a gun, and an open-world Star Wars game was shown. A lot of the games shown don't really grab me enough to reach for my wallet though. I’m waiting for you, Hades 2.
Its Always Sunny In Philidelphia (Season 16) - So far the first three episodes of the season are out, and it kinda goes without saying that if their humour clicks for you then this will be no different. Danny Devito will never not be funny.
